Eastern Red Bat Facts

The Eastern Red Bat, Fairfax VA

The Eastern Red Bat is listed as not threatened in the state of Virginia, but is listed as Vulnerable for the United States as a whole. This is largely due to windturbines and the pressure they give off when in use. This can cause their blood to rush to their head killing them

These bats can be found everywhere here in Virginia, and can be found in every state east of Texas and North Dakota. They can be spotted in the foliage of trees during active months and in tree cavities, logs, or rocks during hibernation in the winter.

Eastern Red Bat Characteristics

AS it's name states, the Eastern Red Bat has a distinct red color of their fur. This is the only bat species in Virginia that is sexual dimorphic meaning that there are distinct visual differences between males and females. The males have a ginger red color to their fur, while females have white tips to their fur making them have a duller look. These bats can be between 3-5 inches long.

Eastern Red Bat Mating and Breeding

The Eastern Red Bat's mating season starts in the late summer, and has delayed fertilization. This means that the female is able to delay getting pregnant until next spring after hibernation. They tend to mate right before they migrate back to their colonies in the winter.

Eastern Red Bat Diet

These bats can be found hunting in many different areas such as urban, suburban, and country areas. The Eastern Red Bat tends to hunt moths, and beetles, but prefer softer insects over the more hard-shelled ones.
